The 65.5/34.5 percent front/rear weight distribution also did the Slingshot no favors here. We're confident the SLR's acceleration numbers would be more braggadocious with a grippier rear tire, but smoking the 305-section-width Kenda radial through second gear looks cooler than getting to 60 mph a half-second quicker. LOWS: Priced like a car, helmet hair, rainy days. HIGHS: 203 horsepower for 1661 pounds, has a manual, surfeit of 'tude. Its quarter-mile outdid the previous Slingshot by half a second at 14.0 seconds and 101 mph. The updated 2.0-liter also beat the old 2.4-liter's time to 100 mph by 2.7 seconds. The blast to 60 mph is over in 5.3 seconds, two-tenths quicker than the last Slingshot we tested, which was propelled by a General Motors–supplied 173-hp 2.4-liter four. Between shifts, you'll find a powerband that delivers plenty of oomph above 6500 rpm. A five-speed manual strikes us as a little quaint, but its shifts felt slicker than what you get in many performance cars. While you can get an automated manual transmission, our tester had as many pedals as it did tires. The 1661-pound SLR has nearly as much torque as a Mazda Miata, which is its closest automotive equivalent in terms of price and performance, but the Polaris revs to 8500 rpm, 1000 more than the Miata. Behind its grumpy plastic fascia sits Polaris's own Prostar 203-hp 2.0-liter inline-four engine, and the SLR uses a wider (11.0-inch) rear wheel than base models. It's about $10,000 more than the entry-level 178-hp Slingshot S and roughly $7000 less than the range-topping Roush Edition. The $35,286 SLR we tested is the middle trim level, presumably between dude and brah. So the question is, what can you do as a parent? The most important thing to do first is to have an open conversation with your teens about proper use of medicine and the risk of abusing prescription drugs. Now you can understand that it is no wonder reports are showing that nearly half of all young people who are using heroin today started off by using prescription painkillers. Take a look at this interactive tool the Medicine Abuse Project designed to help illustrate how a young person after surgery is prescribed a painkiller by her doctor and how a harmless situation like that can translate into an addiction to heroin. While we can be thankful for the advancements that have been made, it is important as parents that we make sure our children are aware of the pros and cons associated with medicine… in particular, prescription drugs.ĭid you know that heroin abuse is closely linked to prior use of prescribed painkillers? Also referred to as opioid drugs, painkillers have an agent in their make-up that has a tendency to induce tolerance in the person taking the drug. Thanks to the speed of technology and growing medical research, it seems like there is a medicine for everything nowadays. Today’s tools can be built using small interchangeable inserts that can be fastened to a larger shank.Īs a result, these inserts gradually wear out since they act as cutting. However, a coated tool’s edges degrade over time, making grinding and resharpening more difficult. The cutting tools can also be given a suitable coating to enhance desired properties. The material used to make the cutting tools must possess the strength to withstand such high cutting temperatures. The cutting tool part experiences high cutting temperatures and continuous rubbing while machining because it remains in direct physical contact with the workpiece. Read Also: 14 Types of Lathe Cutting Tools Used in Lathe Machine Materials of Cutting Tools Let’s move on to the following sections to learn more about cutting tools, their different types, and some real-world applications. Single-point cutting tools and multi-point cutting tools can both be used for cutting. The width, number, and shape of the flutes or teeth, as well as the angles of the cutting face, are all significant factors of the cutting tools.Īll of these variables, as well as the speed and feed at which the machine operates, must be optimized for a longer lifespan. The tool must be able to endure the heat and force produced during the machining process, and the cutting tool material must be harder than the material being cut (workpiece).Īdditionally, the tools need to have a specific geometry with clearance angles so that only the cutting edge of the tool touches the workpiece’s surface. In addition, mechanical and other mechanisms provide a relative velocity between the workpiece and the cutting tool. It has a secure connection to the machine tool. Cutting tools are wedge-shaped, sharp-edged tools used during machining to cut extra layers of material from a workpiece to achieve the desired shape, size, and accuracy. 11/8/2023 0 Comments Columbo publish or perishDirector Joi Ito modified this to "deploy or die", emphasizing the adoption of the technology. The MIT Media Lab's director Nicholas Negroponte instituted the motto "demo or die", privileging demonstrations over publication. Overall, women publish less frequently than men, and when they do publish their work receives fewer citations than their male counterparts, even when it is published in journals with significantly higher impact factors. I don't think I would be regarded as productive enough." Īccording to some researchers, the publish or perish culture might also perpetuate bias in academic institutions. "It's difficult to imagine how I would ever have enough peace and quiet in the present sort of climate to do what I did in 1964," he said. Physicist Peter Higgs, namesake of the Higgs boson, was quoted in 2013 as saying that academic expectations since the 1990s would likely have prevented him from both making his groundbreaking research contributions and attaining tenure. It has also been argued that the quality of scientific work has suffered due to publication pressures. Īlso, publish-or-perish is linked to scientific misconduct or at least questionable ethics. The rewards for exceptional teaching rarely match the rewards for exceptional research, which encourages faculty to favor the latter whenever they conflict. The pressure to publish or perish also detracts from the time and effort professors can devote to teaching undergraduate courses and mentoring graduate students. One brilliant article should outweigh one mediocre book." Similarly, humanities scholar Camille Paglia has described the publish or perish paradigm as "tyranny" and further writes that "The profession has become obsessed with quantity rather than quality. This phenomenon has been strongly criticized, the most notable grounds being that the emphasis on publishing may decrease the value of resulting scholarship, as scholars must spend more time scrambling to publish whatever they can get into print, rather than spending time developing significant research agendas. The call to abolish tenure is very much a minority opinion in such settings. Research-oriented universities may attempt to manage the unhealthy aspects of the publish or perish practices, but their administrators often argue that some pressure to produce cutting-edge research is necessary to motivate scholars early in their careers to focus on research advancement, and learn to balance its achievement with the other responsibilities of the professorial role. Others have attributed the phrase to Columbia University geneticist Kimball C. According to Eugene Garfield, the expression first appeared in an academic context in Logan Wilson's book, "The Academic Man: A Study in the Sociology of a Profession", published in 1942. In 1938, the phrase appeared in a college-related publication. The phrase appeared in a non-academic context in the 1932 book, Archibald Cary Coolidge: Life and Letters, by Harold Jefferson Coolidge. The earliest known use of the term in an academic context was in a 1928 journal article. Journals can be measured by their impact factor (IF), which is the average number of citations to articles published in a particular journal over the last two years. The value of published work is often determined by the prestige of the academic journal it is published in. The pressure to publish has been cited as a cause of poor work being submitted to academic journals. In popular academic perception, scholars who publish infrequently, or who focus on activities that do not result in publications, such as instructing undergraduates, may lose ground in competition for available tenure-track positions. Successful publications bring attention to scholars and their sponsoring institutions, which can help continued funding and their careers. Some researchers have identified the publish or perish environment as a contributing factor to the replication crisis. Such institutional pressure is generally strongest at research universities. " Publish or perish" is an aphorism describing the pressure to publish academic work in order to succeed in an academic career. For the Columbo episode, see Columbo (season 3)#Episodes. This article is about the concept in academia. 11/8/2023 0 Comments Advanced video codec frame countCurrently, there’s H.264, VP6, Windows Media and Sorenson Spark in the streaming space, with MPEG-2 dominating the DVD and Blu-ray spaces. There are still image codecs (like JPEG), audio codecs (like MP3) and more video codecs than you could shake a digital stick at. As the nifty capitalization in the previous sentence suggests, the term codec is a contraction of the two words encoder and decoder. CodecsĬodecs are compression technologies with two components an en coder to compress the file in your studio or office and a decoder to decode the file when played by the remove viewer. For this reason, in this introductory article on streaming media concepts, I define file related terms like codecs, bandwidth, frame rate, data rate and resolution, and then delivery options like streaming and progressive download. However, though many of us use streaming-related terms like data rate and bandwidth every day, there may be some residual lack of certainty as to what they precisely mean and why they are important. The ability to produce streaming media has suddenly become a critical skill set for many web producers. Streaming 101: The Basics – Codecs, Bandwidth, Data Rate and Resolution If you’re finding this article helpful, note that the author of this post now has a book out entitled.Streaming 101: The Basics – Codecs, Bandwidth, Data Rate and Resolution. Thanks for coming and we hope you find it useful. You’ll also learn how to use key Apple HLS creation and checking tools like Media File Segmenter and Variant Playlist Creator. When appropriate, the chapters conclude with a section detailing how to configure the options discussed with FFmpeg, a preferred tool for high-volume video producers, including packaging into HLS and DASH formats (the latter with MP4Box). The book walks the reader through quality testing, basic encoding configurations, encoding with H.264, HEVC, and VP9, and and encoding for adaptive streaming. Since all videos encode differently, the tests detailed in the book involve eight different videos, including movie footage, animations, talking head footage, a music video, and PowerPoint and Camtasia-based videos. This takes the guesswork out of most encoding decisions and allows readers to achieve the optimal quality/data rate tradeoff. Video Encoding by the Numbers teaches you to optimize the quality and efficiency of your streaming video by objectively detailing the impact of critical configuration options with industry-standard quality metrics like PSNR and SSIMplus. Worst I've experienced with RGB Fusion is needing to manually start it every month or so, because my RAM color was the default, but as soon as I started the app, the Ram RGB would work and I would just X out of it. RGB Fusion also has a ton of posts about bad experiences, but I have built several PCs recently with Gigabyte boards, and RGB fusion works just fine, uses 0% CPU and 100MB of RAM tops. Initially, I thought that its a subset of vocal people. Game launcher for mobo software? Monitoring pieces? Power profiles? Fan speeds (lul BIOS?)? 11/8/2023 0 Comments Bvckup purchase codeExperience has shown that a change which seems like a good idea in this area, and might speed up one scenario on one machine, can end up causing more trouble than it is worth. It's core functionality, mistakes with it can lead to data loss, and it has to work well on all systems. It's possible we'll look into this in the future, but it's not going to come soon, as we're very conservative when it comes to changing and testing the file copying code. (Although this isn't out of the question, and may eventually come for things like FTP where parallel copies are unfortunately still the only way to solve those protocols' inherent problems with network latency.) We also need to have a reliable and understandable interactive error/retry UI, which would be complicated by doing multiple files at once as part of the same copy job. It's also very hard to properly test copy speed, due to all the buffering the filesystem does and the huge impact different hardware/software/network configurations can have on what should be minor differences in method and buffer sizes, as well as the types of metadata being preserved, etc. Microsoft Antimalware real-time service was disabled during test's, as I find it to interfere with file operations a lot.įile copy has to be rock solid on everyone's systems, and for every scenario (copying 100,000 almost empty files isn't that common, for example, and isn't the thing to optimise for, especially when none of the copy methods actually take very long). disabled.Īll tests performed on relatively large folder structure of C++ libraries which can be easily reproduced.ġ) Download boost 1.80.0 libraries for Windows from (eg.7z archive) and extract.Ģ) Build Boost 1_80_0 to also build non-header-only libraries - I did this with VS2022 Community. Also, it's interesting to note that Bvckup achieves this high speed despite also copying Alternate Data Stream's and logging copious amounts of data on the copy operation.ĭOpus had copying of attributes, metadata, timestamps etc. I haven't found a faster copying engine yet (including FastCopy and TeraCopy). This thread is about Copy optimisation, where a multi-threaded highly optimised copy engine (as shown with Bvckup2 R81.24.1) is shown to be faster, particularly for SSD's, which only show their true portential with multiple I/O requests in motion at a time - ie. Further to the following thread, requesting various optimisation's that would be nice in DOpus 13, I have spun out into separate threads the various optimisation's and benchmark results. |
